Match Report: Jets go down in Sydney

The Newcastle Jets have ended the season with a 2-0 defeat by Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium tonight.

The match started with the Jets having the first chance in the 7th minute when Dane Ingham was found in the box by Jaushua Sotirio however, the New Zeland defender’s header floated over the crossbar.

Sydney FC almost responded instantly when Adam Le Fondre almost caught Jack Duncan off his line with a half-volley.

The home side opened the scoring in the 29th minute when striker Adam Le Fondre was able to get a toe on Adrian Segicic’s cross to squeeze the ball past Jets goalkeeper Jack Duncan and make it 1-0 as the teams headed into the break.

The Jets started the second half with intent and were unfortunate to concede a second goal when Patrick Wood evaded the Jets defence to make it 2-0.

Sydney FC were awarded a penalty when Matthew Jurman was judged to have fouled Patrick Wood inside the box. From the resulting spot-kick, Max Burgess had his shot saved by Duncan to keep it at 2-0.

The Jets found momentum and threatened Sydney’s goal but to no avail.

The home side found themselves finish the match with 10 men when Jaiden Kucharski was sent from the field for collecting his second yellow card in seven minutes.

The match finished 2-0 to the home side as the Newcastle Jets now prepare for the 2023/24 season.
