ALW Match Preview: Newcastle Jets v Canberra United

The Newcastle Jets travel to Canberra this Saturday to take on Canberra United at McKellar Park at 3pm.

Last week the Jets conceded 4-2 to Sydney FC at home, with an entertaining four goals in the first ten minutes of the game. Newcastle tried to make a comeback in the second half, however Sydney were too strong and held onto their three points.

This week’s game will be a great contest between the two sides, as Canberra are sitting one place above the Jets on eight points, with one point the difference between them.

The Jets will be eager to upset the home side and take the three points back to Newcastle.

Canberra has only won two games this season, with their last game resulting in a 2-0 win against Adelaide United. Prior to this, Canberra had lost three games in a row.

This will be the first time this season the two sides will match up against each other. With their previous meeting resulting in a 3-0 win for Canberra in February 2022.

Former Matilda’s striker, Michelle Heyman has been clinical in attack this season, with three goals to her name and one assist. Heyman is also the all-time leading goal scorer for the A league women’s competition.

Newcastle Jets are hoping to welcome back Sarah Griffith and Murphy Agnew to the playing squad, who will both be eager to cement their spot in the game this weekend.

Canberra’s forward line will be a dangerous threat to the Jets defence. With Newcastle’s right-back Teigen Allen looking to show her experience to show up against Heyman and thwart the all-time leading goal scorer from adding another to her name.

Head Coach Ash Wilson is preparing her team for the clash against Canberra and looks forward to the competitive match for the two sides.

“Canberra certainly are a very formidable opponent, they have speed and attack they’ve got experience, they’re a team that is quite dynamic, and they look to be aggressive.”

“We are not taking any team lightly especially knowing that it’s going to be a tough game. We need to be at our best if we are wanting to beat them,” says Wilson.

“When we are at our best can push any team, we are confident we can take points from these teams. We are not expecting just to walk in and get three points, it’s going to be a tough challenge and the girls are going to need to work hard and put in a full 90-minute performance.”

Both sides have proven that they can score goals this season, with the Jets scoring 14, and Canberra with ten so far this season. Saturday’s game will no doubt be a goal scoring showstopper.

Jets fans can watch the game live on Paramount+ and 10Play when it kicks off at 3pm.
