The Newcastle Jets have agreed to release Craig Goodwin from the remainder of his contract, paving the way for him to join Adelaide United on a two-year deal.
The mutual termination of Goodwin’s Jets contract, which was set to expire at the end of the 2015/16 Hyundai A-League season, enables the 22-year-old to return to his home state of South Australia.
“Craig has been a great servant of the Newcastle Jets and we thank him for his efforts during his time at the Club,” Newcastle Jets head coach Phil Stubbins said.
“With Adelaide coming in for Craig, he was presented with an opportunity to return to his hometown and play in front of his family and friends.
“We’ve got the luxury of having a number of quality players on that left-hand side and after adding everything up, we made a calculated decision to allow Craig to leave.
“It’s an opportunity now for us to bring someone else in who can bolster our ranks in another area of the pitch and we’ll be doing all that we can to ensure we sign the right player.”
Goodwin, who made 44 Hyundai A-League appearances for the Jets and scored five goals, thanked the Club and its Members for their support during his time in Newcastle.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the past two seasons at the Jets and I’d like to thank everyone at the Club including the players, coaches and staff for making me feel so welcome,” Goodwin said.
“The fans have been fantastic as well and I’m extremely grateful for the support they’ve given me during my time in Newcastle.
“We came to a mutual decision with the Club that the time was right for me to move on and that’s why I’ve taken the opportunity to return to South Australia.
“I’m looking forward to starting the next chapter of my career with Adelaide United.”
