Newcastle Jets midfielder Allan Welsh says he is still on a high after making his Hyundai A-League debut for the Newcastle Jets against Perth Glory last weekend.
The former Adelaide United youth team captain said he felt a mixture of nerves and excitement when told by Jets head coach Phil Stubbins that he would be starting against the Glory.
“I found out I was starting when we got to the airport on Friday and I was really excited,” Welsh explained.
“I think it was good not to have too long to think about it, but it helped having a night to sleep on it so I could get ready for the game.
“I had a few nerves and that, but overall I was fairly happy with how I played.
“It was just disappointing not to get the result we were after as a team, but it was good to get my first game under my belt and hopefully there’s many more to come.”
Welsh said he is hopeful his performance against Perth Glory would be enough to see him retained for Saturday’s opening home match against Melbourne Victory at Hunter Stadium.
“I’d like to hope that I’ve done enough to keep my spot,” Welsh said.
“There’s a few more boys coming from injury and being rested, but I think If I train well this week I should hopefully be in contention.”
After four weeks on the road to start the Hyundai A-League 2014/15 campaign, Welsh said the entire Jets squad was excited to play in front of the Club’s Members and supporters for the first time against Melbourne Victory on Saturday.
“It’s been a lot of travel, so we can’t wait to get on that new surface, get in front of our Members and hopefully put on a good show,” Welsh said.
“The Victory are going to be difficult to beat, they’ve got a lot of quality players, but we’ll be ready for it.”
