While the rest of his teammates have enjoyed a week off, Jobe Wheelhouse has been training to recover from foot surgery.
While the rest of his teammates have enjoyed a week off, Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets captain Jobe Wheelhouse has been training hard on his own as he continues his rehabilitation from recent foot surgery.
Wheelhouse had surgery to remove a bursa from his left foot in May and has only recently returned to light duties at training.
“The foot is coming along well actually, but I haven-t had much of a break,” Wheelhouse said.
“I missed the first part of the pre-season, so I put my hand up to do a bit of extra training in the week off while the rest of the boys have been away.
“Hopefully in the next couple of days I-ll be back to running and I think it-ll be maybe one or two weeks before I-m back into full training.”
While he won-t be available to play in the pre-season trial match against the Canberra Rockets in Canberra next Wednesday night, Wheelhouse said he-ll be on hand to help the squad in their preparations for the match.
“For me personally, to be back in with the boys will mean I-ll be looking to help out as much as I can on game day and help out the young boys,” he explained.
“As a team we want to go down there and win. We want to keep our winning record in tact all through the pre-season, no matter who we play.”
Wheelhouse said the Jets- four-day camp in Canberra will provide the squad with the perfect opportunity to get to know each other better on and off the field.
“It-s good, we need to build a really good culture and I think we-re doing that,” he said.
“We-re going the right way to making things better than what they were in previous years off the field and it will be good to get away together as a group.”
Wheelhouse also indicated that the newest members of the Jets squad would be required to perform a team ritual as part of their induction into their new Club.
“A lot of the new boys will have to get up and sing in front of their teammates, so that will probably be quite daunting for them,” he said.
Wheelhouse was speaking at the Jets Golf Day at Newcastle Golf Club on Friday. The event saw the Jets- playing and coaching staff team up with the Club-s sponsors in a 4BBB Ambrose competition.
“It was a bit cold and I think most groups would have been battling the conditions,” Wheelhouse explained.
“It was good fun all in all and it-s good to have all the sponsors out here. The Newcastle Golf Club have put on a great day for us, it-s just a pity about the weather.”
