Newcastle Jets Westfield W-League Head Coach Craig Deans has moved swiftly to secure a replacement keeper following the season ending injury to import Kelsey Wys.
Deans has secured the services of Western New York Flash keeper Katelyn Rowland who will join the side as soon as possible once international clearances are finalised.
Rowland, 22, was part of the Western New York Flash side who won the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Championship this year.
She has previously played for Kansas City in the NWSL in 2015, after she was drafted out of college from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
With a strong career behind her, including being part of both the U-20 and U-23 U.S Women’s National Teams, Deans believes Rowland will be a strong replacement for Wys.
“Obviously with Kelsey and her injury it’s important that we keep competition for spots high and signing Katelyn will allow us to do that,” Deans said.
“She will bring with her the experience of playing in a successful championship winning team and we are looking forward to her bringing her experience and quality to our side.”
This will be the first time for Rowland to travel abroad and she is undoubtedly excited to commence her season with the Newcastle Jets.
“I am extremely excited! This will be my first time playing in Australia, so everything about it will be a new experience for me,” Rowland said.
“I have heard nothing but great reviews about the W-League and the quality of play it possesses.”
“I am looking forward to getting there, meeting the team and getting to work towards a W-League Championship!”
Rowland is expected to arrive in Sydney on Friday morning.
Newcastle Jets Women face Sydney FC Women at 2:30pm on Sunday at McDonald Jones Stadium.
