Newcastle Jets head coach Gary van Egmond was a surprise visitor at Mayfield United Junior Football Club training last Thursday night.
Van Egmond coordinated a session for the Club-s youngsters at their Stevenson Park training ground.
After spending three years coaching some of Australia-s most talented up-and-comers during his stint at the Australian Institute of Sport, van Egmond said that junior development is still something that he holds very close to his heart.
“It-s great to see the young kids come out to training and participate because that-s what it-s all about at grassroots level,” van Egmond said.
“To see the smiles on the kids- faces and the absolute joy that they get from playing football is fantastic.
“I-m sure there-s some players from Mayfield and other local Clubs who are looking at making association rep teams and progressing into the Emerging Jets program.
“At the end of the day though, for these kids it-s all about having a kick, staying healthy and being able to play a game we all love.”
