They held them out for almost 70 minutes, but top of the table Melbourne City prevailed 2-0 against the Jets
This game was an end-to-end affair in the first-half, with both teams having plenty of chances to score. Libby Copus-Brown had a cracking effort blocked by Taylor Otto in the first minute which was goal-bound. It was City’s turn to attack next, and this time it was Matilda Tash Prior who made the block against the Speckmaier attempt.
Again, City made a quality block, this time it was Karly Roestbakken who denied Josie Allan a goal. City then went back up the other end and had a chance of their own, this time striking the post as they only just missed the chance to open the scoring. Sophie Hoban missed a golden chance minutes before halftime, but was unable to find the back of the net.
This pretty much summed up the first-half, with several chances falling to either teams but neither being able to score before half-time. The second half started much the same, as Sheridan Gallagher missed the target within a minute of the game resuming. City continued to dominate the ball and with that created several more shots.
Tash Prior made yet another block against Speckmaier, as the Jets fought hard to maintain their clean sheet. Sheridan got in behind the City defence, thinking she had a chance to score, but the assistant referee raised the flag, making her offside. Emma Dundas was substituted off for Claire Adams in the 64th minute.
City were able to break the deadlock in the 69th minute, as Laura Hughes thumped a long-distance shot off of the post and in to give Melbourne City the lead. They were then able to double their lead in the 85th minute, as Holly McNamara grabbed a second goal to put the game out of reach for the girls. The girls continued to fight until full-time, but they were unable to grab a goal, as the score finished 2-0 to Melbourne City.
