It’s been quite a tight history between the Jets and the Wanderers since the latter joined the league in 2012.
From the 25 games played between the two clubs, it’s neck-and-neck with the Jets securing eight victories to the Wanderers nine, in addition to the eight draws played.
With that in mind, there’s been plenty of exciting performances when playing Western Sydney, and here are five of the best.
#5. 2-1 win, Round 6, 2012/13
In our first ever match against the then-brand new club, our Jets picked up an exciting victory at Parramatta Stadium with two of our attacking weapons sealing the deal.
While Joe Gibbs scored first for the hosts, Ryan Griffiths levelled the game not too long later before former English international Emile Heskey scored the eventual winner before half-time.
The second half proved tense and fiery with six cards dished out, including a red for Jacob Pepper as we ended the game with 10-men, but still with the win.
#4. 2-0 win, Round 21, 2013/14
A season later, we travelled back to Wanderland and took the three points once again in front of over 12,000 fans.
Kew Jaliens, now Youth Technical Director in the region, scored the first with a free header at the back stick and Adam Taggart doubled the lead with a deflected goal midway through the second stanza.
That proved to be just one of 16 goals for Taggart as he went onto the win the leagues’ Golden Boot.
#3. 3-2 win, Round 24, 2018/19
What an exciting afternoon this was at McDonald Jones Stadium.
In a last ditched effort to qualify for the finals, our Jets were desperate to get the win at home and fought back after conceding the first goal late in the first half.
Roy O’Donovan snatched one back before, now Wanderer, Dimi Petratos put us ahead.
Keanu Baccus levelled the score for the visitors with just 15 minutes to go, before local boy, Angus Thurgate stepped up and nailed the third to secure a fantastic victory late in the season.
#2. 4-0 win, Round 12, 2017/18
Unfortunately for the Wanderers in 2017, they faced our Jets just as we were hitting our straps midway through our Grand Final season and it resulted in a terrific home victory in front of almost 10,000 fans.
Interestingly enough, two of the goal scorers now play at the Wanderers and will be lining up against us on Sunday, but on this day, both Johnny Koutroumbis and Steven Ugarkovic landed goals.
Local veterans Jason Hoffman and Ben Kantarovski also got on the scoresheet in the second half to help us to a big win and cap off three victories in a row.
#1. 5-1 win, Round 17, 2018/19
One season later, it was another four-goal victory as our Jets reigned supreme at ANZ Stadium.
Dimi Petratos, Jason Hoffman and Roy O’Donovan were all first half goal-scorers to give us a commanding lead, before Matt Ridenton scored his only goal for the Club, and O’Donovan tallied another from the penalty spot.
That victory kickstarted a five game unbeaten run, and our team will once again be hoping for a similar victory when we travel this Sunday.
