Super-Subs Step Up to Earn a Point for the Jets

Three of the Jets substitutes were able to provide goals or assists to fight back from a 2-0 deficit to secure a hard-fought point for Newcastle in wet and windy conditions.

Adelaide had the better start of the two teams, as Fiona Worts scored in the fourth minute with the first shot of the game. Dawber got the ball out on the right wing before delivering a cross along the ground to Worts, who finished past Tiahna Robertson to give Adelaide the 1-0 lead just four minutes into the game.

Despite Adelaide’s early dominance of the match, the Jets were able to take control of the ball and began to create chances of their own. Libby Copus-Brown had a close-range shot saved by Jenkins, before the ball dropped to Lauren Allan who was unable to direct her shot goalwards. Sheridan Gallagher was almost able to equalise the scoreline, as she unleashed a shot from distance which forced Jenkins into making an excellent save.

Lauren Allan almost scored a header from just outside the box, as Sheridan Gallaghers cross found the winger’s head. Unfortunately for the Jets, the ball didn’t quite drop into the goal after striking the post. Cass Davis soon had an effort of her own saved by Jenkins. Cass found herself in some space in the middle of the park, shooting from 25 yards out but yet again, Jenkins was up to the task, pushing the ball over the bar to maintain Adelaide’s lead.

Half time was soon blown at a rainy No 2 Sportsground, with Adelaide maintaining their 1-0 lead going into the break. The Jets came out much sharper in the second half, grabbing a hold on the with Lauren Allan lashing a cross across goal towards Gallagher, which was cleared by the Adelaide defender. The wet conditions made it tough for both teams to play, with numerous passes skidding across the soaking wet surface, whilst others were dragging in the wet.

Newcastle had a chance to equalise, as Lauren Allan was played in behind before squaring it to Deven Jackson. To the Jets dismay, Lauren was deemed to have been offside, meaning the scoreline remained 1-0 as the game approached the final half-hour. Adelaide came with a chance of their own, which Tiahna Robertson was able to save with her knee.

Ryan Campbell looked to his bench in the 69th minute, bringing on Lara Gooch for Chloe Walandouw as he chased an equaliser. Josie Allan was also brought on for Sheridan Gallagher in the 73rd minute. Straight after, Adelaide scored a second goal against the run of play, as she got in behind and slotted past Robertson to double their lead.

Almost straight from the kick-off, the Jets found a goal, as Josie Allan’s cross-come-shot looped over Jenkins and into the top corner, leaving the Jets 15 minutes to find themselves another goal. Unfortunately, Adelaide grabbed a third soon after, as Leon headed home from a corner to put the Reds up 3-1.

Yet again, the Jets were able to reduce the deficit to one, as Libby Copus-Brown swung in a cross from the right hand side towards Deven Jackson, who was able to direct her header into the back of the net, making the score 3-2 with five minutes plus injury time remaining. Claire Adams and Milan Hammond were brought on after the goal for Emma Dundas and Lauren Allan.

In the 93rd minute, substitutes Lara Gooch and Claire Adams were able to combine magnificently to find an equaliser. Lara Gooch took the ball out wide, drove forwards before driving a cross into the box. Claire Adams was able to leap above everyone in the box, heading past Jenkins to make the score 3-3 whilst also scoring her first professional goal in the process. Not long after, the full-time whistle was blown, with the Jets rescuing a point at the death in wet and windy conditions.
