Newcastle stamped themselves on the game early, holding the majority of the ball across the first 15 minutes, however they weren’t able to trouble the Roar goal. Taylor went on a mazy run in the 17th minute, beating three defenders before Herrington was able to recover enough to block his shot.
Brisbane soon warmed into the game, as Halloran and Hingert linked up to generate a chance, but Natta was able to cut out the cross by the latter.
Callum Timmins rattled the crossbar from just inside the box, with the ball appearing to cross the line and bounce back out. Unfortunately for the Jets, the goal was not given. Soon after, Aquilina had another chance to give Newcastle the lead, but Frecke was able to get down quick enough to save his effort.
The Jets struck the woodwork again, this time through Eli Adams as he struck a sweet half-volley from just outside the box. Ben Gibson was able to take control of the rebound but wasn’t able to fashion a shot for himself or a teammate, with Brisbane eventually clearing the danger.
Despite dominating the majority of the first half, as well as hitting the crossbar twice, the Jets were unable to grab a goal, as they went into the sheds 0-0. At the half, Eli Adams was substituted off for Matthew Scarcella, whilst the home team subbed off Zabala for Klein.
Five minutes after the interval, Aquilina delivered a cross looking for Ben Gibson at the back post. Frecke came out and punched clear, with the ball falling to the feet of Bayliss whose shot pin-balled around the box before Frecke was able to get a hold of it.
Ryan Scott was soon called into action for the first time, as Jelacic unleashed a powerful shot from out wide. Scott was more than equal to the effort, as he palmed out for a corner. Minutes later, Scott was forced into another save, palming Kleins effort over the bar.
Brisbane had a quick flurry of chances from the resulting corner, with Herrington’s header hitting the bar before O’Shea’s long distance effort was deflected for a third corner in as many minutes for the home side.
The Roar began to take control of the match again, with Klein narrowly heading wide from a Jelacic free kick. In the 65th minute, Wellisol and Lachie Rose were introduced for Ben Gibson and Clayton Taylor.
Despite Brisbane’s dominance of the second half, it was the Jets who scored first, as super-sub Lachie Rose opened his Jets account following a brilliant team move in the 74th minute. Wellisol picked up the ball in the midfield before spraying a pass out to Aquilina on the right hand side, who delivered another pin-point cross that found Rose at the back stick, making no mistake with his first time finish.
Brisbane quickly resumed their dominance of the ball, as they probed in and around the Jets box, but struggled to create any solid chances. When they did create chances, Ryan Scott and his defenders were able to bat them away from the goal. The full-time whistle was blown after a nail-biting three minutes of injury time, securing the Jets third win of the season.
The Newcastle Jets will be back in action at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday, 12th of January against Macarthur FC.
