The Brisbane Roar Westfield W-League side has secured their first win of the 2010-11 season in convincing fashion with a comfortable 4-0 victory over the Newcastle Jets at Wanderers Oval on Saturday afternoon.

It was a comprehensive display by the Roar, as they dominated play from the opening whistle. The visitors came out of the blocks with a flurry and opened the scoring after just two minutes through Lana Harch. Tameka Butt then doubled the Roar’s advantage midway through half in what was a stunning display of attacking football during the opening 45 by the Queenslanders.
The second half proved to be more of the same with Harch sealing her brace before Westfield Matilda Lisa De Vanna, just signed by the Jets a fortnight ago, came off the bench to convert a penalty.
The opening exchanges certainly went the way of the Roar, with Harch latching on to a fine Amy Chapman cross from the right. The Roar striker made no mistake when presented with the opportunity, tapping home from close range.
Butt then began to cause problems for the Jets defence, crafting a number of chances for herself through her mobility. However, the speedy striker was denied first by the post and then by Jets goalkeeper Alison Logue in the 14th and 18th minutes respectively.
However, it wouldn’t be long before Butt would add to the scoreline when she slotted home the Roar’s second goal in the 25th minute. Butt was played clean through behind the Jets’ defence before rounding goalkeeper Logue and calmly placing the ball in the back of the net.
For the home side, the best chance of the half fell to Amber Neilson, whose free-kick from the edge of the area just moments before the half-time whistle whizzed over the bar and harmlessly out for a goalkick.
The second stanza looked as though it would be a tighter contest when Jets striker Sasha McDonnell received a fine through ball from midfielder Kara Mowbray in the 52nd minute, but McDonnell’s strike was pushed wide of the target.
However, Newcastle’s comeback was quashed when Harch claimed her second goal on the hour mark with a sweet first-time strike from the edge of the area after latching on to a square ball from Butt to give the Roar a thee-goal cushion.
With the result all but decided, De Vanna stepped off the bench for Brisbane and made an immediate impact, winning a penalty in the 71st minute after being brought down in the area by Neilson. The diminutive striker duly converted the spot-kick to round out the scoring.
The impressive Butt and De Vanna continued to power forward and create chances in the final moments of the game, but it would end with a 4-0 scoreline and the Roar sending a strong message to the rest of the Westfield W-League competition.
