Newcastle Jets suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat away to Melbourne City on Saturday evening.
THE SUMMARY:
Newcastle Jets were dealt a comprehensive 4-0 defeat by Melbourne City at AAMI Park on Saturday night, the home side showing too much class and control for the Novocastrians in the Victorian capital.
A first half goal by former Jet Kew Jaliens plus second half strikes by Harry Novillo, David Williams and Iain Ramsay did the damage for the hosts as they earned a place back in the Hyundai A-League’s top six.
The Jets remain bottom of the competition ladder and will need to improve their form when they tackle ninth-placed Western Sydney Wanderers away from home next round.
Enver Alivodić provided the strongest attacking threat for the Jets throughout the game – his 51st minute strike after turning Aaron Mooy in the box whisked past Tando Velaphi’s right post and was as close as Newcastle came to scoring on what was a disappointing night for the Club.

THE GOALS:
18’ > 1-0. Former Jets skipper Jaliens gave Melbourne City the lead 18 minutes into the game when he lashed a shot beyond Newcastle custodian Ben Kennedy from close range. As Mooy swung in a dangerous corner, the Jets defence was too loose and Jaliens snuck in unmarked to fire past his former teammate from six yards.
47’ > 2-0. Two minutes after the interval Melbourne City doubled their advantage. Daniel Mullen was robbed of possession in the box before the Jets defence retreated to try and thwart the opportunity for the home side. It looked as if the Jets may have done enough when Robert Koren’s shot was blocked, but the ball broke to Novillo who fired past Kennedy.Â
63’ > 3-0. The points were sealed for City just after the hour mark when Koren played a precise pass to Williams. On replay the former North Queensland Fury man may have been slightly offside, but nevertheless his first time effort flew beyond Kennedy and into the back of the net as City went three goals up.
88’ > 4-0. City added further gloss to the scoreboard late in the game when Mooy collected possession in midfield, dribbled forward then found substitute attacker Ramsay. Ramsay’s crisp angled effort found the back of the net to round out the scoring.Â
