The Mariners came out of the box and had plenty of possession but the first real chance fell to the Jets when Daniel Stynes was played in behind by Mark Natta. Stynes’ low cross was narrowly missed by Beka Mikeltadze.
The Mariners opened the scoring when Marco Túlio received the ball after a challenge from Farrell fell to his feet. The Brazilian spotted Jack Duncan off his line to score.
The Jets settled into the match and saw plenty of possession but Newcastle couldn’t find a response as they headed into sheds down 1-0.
The Jets began the second half strongly and were unlucky to not draw level when Trent Buhagiar found space down the right. Buhagiar’s cross found Mikeltadze who tried to curl the ball into the net however Mariners defender Brian Kaltak managed to clear with his head.
The Mariners doubled their lead in the 62nd minute when Jason Cummings was in played through on goal. The Socceroos striker made no mistake as he dinked the ball over Jack Duncan.
The Mariners enjoyed a spell of possession and almost made it 3-0 however, Jack Duncan pulled off a smart save to deny Michael Ruhs.
The Mariners sealed the points when VAR intervened to award the home side a penalty. Beni Nkololo stepped up to make it 3-0.
The Jets are back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Adelaide United on the 27th December.
