Report: Brisbane show their Roar in big win

The Jets got off to a rough start, as a ball over the top sent Kuilamu in behind, who buried her shot into the top corner, giving Brisbane the lead in just the second minute of the game. Brisbane almost doubled their lead in the eight minute, as Sharn Freier got in behind before squaring a ball across the box, but Tiahna was well positioned to save the shot.

Newcastle were quickly able to switch on however, taking control of the ball and creating chances but ultimately unable to challenge Sekany with any real shots on goal. In the 24th minute, Sheridan Gallagher almost pulled off the impossible, as her back-heel flick dribbled just wide of the post. India Breier had a shot from a free kick which just cleared the crossbar. A few moments later, India Breier sent a shot to Deven Jackson at the back stick, but she couldn’t direct her shot goalward.

The Jets were finally able to capitalise on their dominance, as Cass Davis won the ball just outside Brisbane’s box, before Sheridan took control of it, playing in India Breier who squared the ball to Cass, who made no mistake, equalising the score at 1-1. Unfortunately, Brisbane were quickly able to restore their lead, as Levin headed home from a corner.

The Roar soon began to take control of possession, and with that a third goal, as Laini Freier was able to tap in from close range, giving Brisbane a 3-1 lead going into the break.

Brisbane continued their dominance, as Hayashi smashed in a free kick from well outside the box, making it 4-1 minutes into the second half. Josie Allan, Lauren Allan, and Alexis Collins came off the bench for India Breier, Emma Dundas and Sheridan Gallagher. Deven Jackson almost grabbed a second for Newcastle, as Sophie found her in the box, but the Brisbane shot-stopper was able to do enough to keep the score at 4-1.

Minutes later, Brisbane scored to make it 5-1, Laini Freier scoring her second of the day, before she secured her hattrick as she scored Brisbane’s 6th of the day. The full-time whistle soon came, with Brisbane running out 6-1 winners. The Jets next home game is away to Canberra, December 29th at 5pm.
