Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets recruit Scott Neville believes learning under Jets head coach Gary van Egmond will help him to become a better footballer.
Neville switched to the Jets after making 63 appearances in the A-League with Perth Glory over the past four seasons and the 23-year-old is confident the change in scenery will have a beneficial effect on his career.
“It was about a change in lifestyle and also just a change to get out of my comfort zone,” Neville said.
“I wanted to learn a bit more and I think I-ve come to the right place to learn and improve as a football player.
“There-s a lot of younger boys here, a good mentality and a good philosophy and hopefully we get to play some attractive football this year.”
While Neville is yet to play under van Egmond, he said the feedback he received from other players about van Egmond-s coaching style and playing philosophy made the decision to join the Jets a straightforward one.
“I-ve heard some good reports from some of the younger players and even the older players who had him last time he was at the Newcastle Jets,” Neville said.
“It was kind of a no-brainer really.”
Neville was confident he wouldn-t have any trouble settling into his new surrounds given the fact he was already familiar with a number of his teammates.
“I-ve played with five or six of them either at Perth or with the Olyroos, as well as playing against them week in week out,” he explained.
“The transition has been pretty easy straight away.”
Having arrived in Newcastle last weekend, Neville said the Hunter region had already made a positive impression on him.
“It is pretty impressive actually. Most people have their own different opinions of Newcastle and I was the same until I actually came here,” he said.
“It-s a lovely place to live and I can-t wait to get settled and get into it.”
