Match Report: Jets share points with City

The Newcastle Jets have shared the points with Melbourne City in an eventful match in the Victorian capital.

The match sprung into action when Jamie Maclaren intercepted a loose ball to fire a shot from at goal only to be denied by an imposing Michael Weier who did well to stop the home side from opening the scoring.

The Jets went on the attack and almost scored the opener when Dane Ingham made a great run down the left flank to cross it for Kosta Grozos who fired his shot high and wide.

The Jets continued to assault the Melbourne backline and were awarded a penalty when Carl Jenkinson’s header from a Kosta Grozos free kick was handled in the box by Andrew Nabbout. After a VAR check, the referee pointed to the spot. Beka Mikeltadze made no mistake as he tucked the ball away to send Newcastle 1-0 up in the 31st minute.

The home side found themselves down to 10 men when Scott Jamieson received his second yellow card of the match after a challenge on Beka Mikeltadze.

The Jets started the second half with momentum and continued to thwart City’s attacks while making their way down the field to test goalkeeper Thomas Glover.

The Jets were dealt with more late heartache when a late corner was headed home by teenager Max Caputo in the 90th minute.

The Jets now face a trip away to Brisbane Roar in the Queensland capital next Saturday.
