The Newcastle Jets have made history by defeating Melbourne City for the first time in the Ninja A-League, 3-1 at AAMI Park this afternoon.
The Jets had a great opportunity to take an early lead when Libby Copus-Brown found space in the box however her shot was inches wide.
In the 14th minute Kelli Brown played a cross back across goal for Charlotte Lancaster however her goal-bound shot was blocked by Alexia Apostolakis to keep the home side from going 1-0 down.
The home side had their first real effort on goal when Leticia McKenna launched a shot from outside of the 18-yard box which took a brilliant save from Newcastle goalkeeper Anna Leat to keep it at 0-0.
The Jets were finally rewarded when Alexis Collins was played through on goal by Melina Ayres, the striker saw her shot saved however the rebound fell to Kelli Brown who made it 1-0.
Melbourne City were awarded a penalty right on half time when a handball was ruled against Natasha Prior. City striker Holly McNamara made no mistake from the spot to make it 1-1.
The Jets started the second half with intent and extended the lead when captain Libby Copus-Brown put pressure on the Melbourne defenders in the box to win the ball and shoot past Malena Mieres and make it 2-1 to Stephen Hoyle’s side.
Newcastle weren’t finished there and midfielder Charlotte Lancaster backed up her heroic efforts against Sydney FC by linking up brilliantly with Melina Ayres to secure all three points for Stephen Hoyle’s side.
The 3-1 win is the Jets’ first over Melbourne City in the Ninja A-League.
