Match Report: Box Office Jets Defeat Wanderers To Jump Into Top Three

The Newcastle Jets defeated the Western Sydney Wanderers 2-1 at CommBank Stadium to jump into the top three in the A-League

The first chance of the game fell to the home side in the 11th minute. Carluccio got himself of the end of an incisive pass in behind, before cutting the ball across the box to Thurgate. Angus Thurgate then found Kuol, who was able to get a foot on the ball, but not enough behind it. Joel Bertolissio was able to clear the loose ball well before it crossed the goal line.

Just a few minutes later, in the 15th minute, Joe Shaughnessy would open his Jets account to give us the lead over the Wanderers. Eli Adams drove with the ball on the right wing, before cutting back and swinging in a left footed cross into the box. Shaughnessy was able to hold off his marker, before stooping down to nod the ball past Thomas in goal.

The Box Office Jets continued their momentum, and found another breakthrough in the 38th minute. Will Dobson and Eli Adams stood over a free kick just a few metres outside the box. Dobson ran towards the ball, before rolling it backwards into the path of Eli Adams. Eli would smash his effort first time, launching it into the top corner, with Lawrence Thomas rooted to his spot.

Not long before the break, Dylan Scicluna (brother of Lucas) would worm his way into the Jets box, before squaring a ball to Kosta Barbarouses. Kosta would fire, but his effort would narrowly clear the crossbar. The score remained at 2-0 to the Jets when the first half ended.

Eli Adams was subbed off during the halftime, with Xavier Bertoncello coming on to replace him. Lachlan Bayliss would strike from distance early in the second stanza, with Thomas making a good save to deny his effort. Dobson would try his luck moments later, but his shot came crashing back off the post.

In the 65th minute, Barbarouses would again have a chance to hit the back of the net, as he found himself 1 on 1 with Delianov. Kosta would fire hard and low, but couldn’t beat Delianov, who got down quickly to deny the New Zealand International.

The Wanderers found their breakthrough in the 83rd minute, as subsitute Lual finished neatly into the bottom corner following a low cross from Pantazopoulos. Lual was almost the hero, as Thurgate found him with space inside the box. Lual turned and fired, but Delianov held firm and pushed his shot over the crossbar.

Full time would come soon after, with the Newcastle Jets leaving CommBank with all three points, as well as jumping into third place ahead of this Friday’s clash with Wellington Phoenix at McDonald Jones Stadium. Tickets available HERE!
