The Newcastle Jets have today re-signed goalkeeper Ben Kennedy for a period of 2-years, keeping the youngster on board until the end of the Hyundai A-League 2011/12 season.
The Newcastle Jets have today re-signed goalkeeper Ben Kennedy for a period of 2-years, keeping the youngster on board until the end of the Hyundai A-League 2011/12 season.
After making his debut with the club in August 2006 at the age of 19, Kennedy has gone on to appear in 25 Hyundai A-League matches and 5 AFC Champions League games. One of the youngest goalkeepers in Australia-s top-flight competition, the 22-year-old Novocastrian had to bide his time as second choice to Qantas Socceroo Ante Covic for some time, but will now have the opportunity to shine long-term with his hometown club.
“During his time at the club Ben has displayed not only what great potential he has on the field, but a great maturity and professional demeanour off it,” club CEO John Tsatsimas said this afternoon.
“He is a Newcastle boy that has developed with the club over a period of many years and it-s fantastic to see him claim the number 1 jersey.”
The talented shot-stopper showed just what he is capable of a fortnight ago when he stepped up to save a Travis Dodd penalty in the 58th minute in a thrilling 1-all draw against Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium.
“Obviously Ben has a great deal of natural talent, and he is quite young by goalkeeping standards so we look forward to watching him grow in stature in Jets colours over the next few years.”
“Our club has always been prepared to give young players opportunities and through our talent identification and youth development processes this will continue with players like Ben throughout the foreseeable future,” Mr. Tsatsimas said.
