The Newcastle Jets were treated to an inspiring pre-match speech from Newcastle legend Craig Johnston on Saturday night at Hunter Stadium, and it resulted in turning around a three-game losing streak.
Coach Gary van Egmond knew Johnston was in town and asked chairman Ray Baartz to arrange the former Liverpool champion to address the team.
“We had Craig Johnston come in before the game and talk and inspire the boys,” van Egmond said after the game.
“He probably talked for about 15 minutes and no one moved.
“It was very inspiring.
“We talked about the things that he brought to the table with that conversation, and looking at this game as being your last game, how would you like to be remembered.
“The boys went out there and did themselves very proud.”
The Jets keep themselves in the top six after the 2-1 win over Sydney FC at Hunter Stadium.
