The Newcastle Jets Youth team will take on defending NBN State League Champions Broadmeadow Magic at Wanderers Oval on Sunday afternoon.

The Jets are coming off their second 2-2 draw is an many weeks after sharing the points with Edgeworth Eagles at Jack McLaughlan Oval last weekend.

Newcastle coach Craig Deans said the young Jets- performance in that fixture was a sign they are making progress.

“It was a much better performance than the week previously against Lambton,” Deans said.

“We were a lot more controlled, more dominant and there was a lot more intensity in and they were a bit unlucky not to get all three points.

“There were still plenty of things they could learn from the game, so hopefully we can fix them this week at training and get ready for Broadmeadow.”

Deans said he expected the Jets to face their toughest test of the season to date when they take on the first-placed Magic on Sunday.

“They-ve probably been the most consistent club in Newcastle for the past four to five years and they-ve set a good standard on and off the field,” Deans said.

“It-s a great opportunity for our young players to go there and face the challenge of playing against a really strong team and we-re looking forward to it.

“The key for us is to stay focused, we need to make sure we don-t get lazy at the back and concede cheap goals like we have in the last few weeks.

“We know we-re going to create opportunities to scores goals, but we just have to makes sure we keep it tight at the back.”
