The Newcastle Jets Youth team take on Edgeworth Eagles in Round 6 of the NBN State League at Jack McLaughlan Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The Jets are coming off a 2-2 draw with Lambton Jaffas last weekend, which saw them drop two points after conceding a late equaliser.

Jets assistant coach Craig Deans said the young Jets had learned a valuable lesson against Lambton about what it takes to close out a game.

“It was a bit disappointing last week to get in front and be in control of the game for most of the second half, only to concede a goal in the last five minutes,” Deans said.

“In that situation, how the game pans out is in our own hands and I think that-s something we need to keep working with the young players on.

“We-ve got quite a young squad at the moment and there are a lot of things they need to keep working on and keep getting better at and reading the situation of where the game is at is one of the main ones.

“We-ve got a good opportunity against Edgeworth this weekend to make sure we fix that.”

The Jets, who currently sit in seventh position on the NBN State League ladder with seven points, can draw level with the fourth-placed Eagles with a win on Saturday.

“We played Edgeworth a couple of times in pre-season and they were good matches, so we-re expecting another tough game on Saturday,” Deans said.

“Last year, every game we played them in was quite tight, with only a goal or two in them.

“We just need to focus on ourselves and do all the little things right. We know Edgeworth is a good team and we can-t afford to underestimate them at all.”
