The Newcastle Jets Youth Team has gone down 3-0 to a strong Queensland Roar Youth Team this afternoon at Perry Park in Brisbane.
The young Roar outfit boasted the likes of Michael Zullo and Robbie Kruse, who caused the Jets problems with their pace and senior team experience. However, it was a brace to fellow senior team midfielder Chris Grossman that would do the real damage and give the home team a hard earned victory.
The Jets lifted their intensity in the second half and played some fine football, particularly when the Roar went down to ten men with some 20 minutes remaining. The boys from the Hunter would be caught late in the game though, and were hit on the counter-attack by a lightning quick Roar team for their third goal of the game.
Newcastle Jets Youth Team coach Craig Deans said that there were valuable lessons to be learned from the game for his young chargers.
“There was certainly a lot that can be taken from the game from our point of view,” he said. “We played some nice football, particularly in patches of the second half, but ultimately we paid the price for our mistakes. They had some experienced boys out there who made the most of their chances and that-s something the younger ones can learn from.”
“We-ve had a couple of away games now and it-ll be good to head home to Newcastle to play in front of our home fans for the first time next week,” said Deans.
The Newcastle Jets Youth Team will take on the Melbourne Victory Youth Team on Saturday, 18 October as a curtain-raiser to the blockbuster clash between the senior teams.
