Jets rescue point against Canberra

The Newcastle Jets have come from behind to draw 2-2 against Canberra United in the Ninja A-League.

Newcastle had a quick start to the game, with Lara Gooch scoring an absolute worldie 10 minutes into the game. Canberra keeper Sally James threw the ball out to her defender, who couldn’t control the ball. Lara pounced on her, winning the ball before curling in her strike from outside the box, finding the top corner with James having no chance of saving it.

The highs quickly turned to lows, with Matildas defender Tash Prior having to be withdrawn from the game due to a head clash with a Canberra player from a corner. Josie Wilson came on to replace her. Soon after, the misery was piled on as Canberra were able to squeeze in a goal after a Christopherson cross deflected off of Josie Wilson into the goal.

Just minutes later, Canberra were able to grab the lead as Michelle Heyman got in behind the defence, poking the ball past Kryzyzaniak to put Canberra 2-1 up. The scoreline remained the same as the halftime whistle was blown.

Lara Gooch was subbed off at halftime for Josie Allan. Cass Davis got in behind and fired a shot, beating the keeper but being kept out by the woodwork. Moments later, Kryzyzaniak got down brilliantly to her left to deny Canberra a goal.

Claire Adams had an effort from a free-kick deflected over the bar for a corner. Josie Allan soon took matters into her own hands, as she nutmegged one defender before dancing her way around another, squaring a ball to Sheridan Gallagher who made no mistake as she tapped into the empty net. 2-2.

Claire Adams had another near-goal from a set-piece, as her free-kick in the 77th minute struck the crossbar before going out of play. Canberra came close in the 84th minute, as they struck the bar from close range. They came close again just seconds after, as Kryzyzaniak palmed a header out of play. Sheridan Gallagher was sent off for two yellows in the 88th minute, following a late challenge on the Canberra United player. The Jets were able to hold them out, with the score remaining at 2-2 when the full-time whistle was blown.
