The Newcastle Jets have released defender Tiago Calvano from the remainder of his contract after he links up with Sydney.
The Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets have released defender Tiago Calvano from the remainder of his contract.
The mutual termination of the contract enables the Brazilian to join Sydney FC for the rest of the A-League season as an injury replacement for Pascal Bosschaart.
Tiago joined the Jets ahead of the 2011/12 season and featured in 21 matches for the Club that campaign, including 20 starting appearances.
The centre-back played a further seven games for Newcastle this season, scoring his first A-League goal away to Perth Glory in Round 5. However, he has struggled for game time since.
Jets CEO Robbie Middleby appreciated what Calvano brought to the team and was pleased he will remain in the A-League.
“We are very grateful for everything that Tiago has done for the Newcastle Jets, both on and off the field,” Middleby said.
“While we have decided to go our separate ways, we-re happy that he has been able to secure a contract at Sydney FC.
“Tiago is a talented footballer and a great person who still has plenty to offer.
“It is pleasing he has joined Sydney FC and will remain in the A-League for at least the remainder of this season.”
Jets coach Gary van Egmond thanked Calvano for his contribution to the Jets.
“Tiago has shown great leadership during his time at the Jets and he has contributed significantly to the culture we are building at the Jets,” van Egmond said.
“He has been excellent in regards to his mentoring of the younger players, especially some of the ones coming through now.
“The Club is better for Tiago being here and we wish him every success in the future.”
Calvano is grateful for his time playing with the Jets.
“I have really enjoyed my time at the Jets and I just want to thank everyone,” Calvano said.
“Thank you to all the people at the Club, my teammates and the fans.
“I am fortunate to get an opportunity to play with Sydney and I am looking forward to playing more A-League games.”
Calvano will commence training with Sydney FC on Thursday.
