Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets utility Josh Brillante says the Jets need to get back to the attacking football that was so successful for them in the early part of the season.
The Jets won four of their first six games to start the season, but the results, along with the goals have dried up in recent weeks as they have looked to correct their inability to keep a clean sheet.
Brillante said the focus on defending had caused the Jets to lose some of their potency in attack, but they will look to regain that against Sydney on Saturday.
“I think we-re focusing too much on defending, we just need to play our own game and attack more and play our free-flowing game,” Brillante explained.
“Sydney are in last position at the moment, so I think it-s a good opportunity for us to play well this week and get a win.
“Between third and last there-s not much difference, so a win could take us up near the top and a loss could take us down to the bottom.
“The morale between the boys is really good, we-ve just got to keep our heads high and put in a good performance.”
Brillante has featured predominantly as a fullback during his appearances for the Jets this season, but with the absence of Ben Kantarovski and Jobe Wheelhouse due to injury he may be called on to play in the midfield this weekend.
“I-m feeling good coming into his game. We-ve had a good week of training and hopefully we can put in a good performance,” Brillante said.
“Each week I-m feeling a lot better and I-ve been getting more time playing in midfield so I-m feeling pretty good at the moment.”
Brillante said the Jets are thankful for the support shown by their Members and fans so far this season and he hoped to see a big crowd at Hunter Stadium on Saturday.
“The bigger the crowd the better for us. I think it-s important that we put in a good performance for the fans, so hopefully they all turn out and support us,” he said.
“We-re very grateful that they-ve stuck with us and hopefully they can come out and do it again.”
