Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets forward Adam Taggart says the Jets are well aware of what is at stake when they take on Brisbane Roar in Friday night-s vital fixture at Hunter Stadium.
A win tomorrow will move the Jets five points clear of the seventh-placed Roar, further solidifying their place in the A-League-s top six.
“The whole team knows it-s a big game for us, obviously going for the top six and trying to get as far ahead of the other teams as possible, especially Brisbane who are just behind us,” Taggart said.
“It-s a massive game and three points will give us a lot of confidence going into last few games and the big trip coming up.
“It-s another big game, and I wouldn-t say all the pressure is off us just yet, so it will be an exciting game and we-re all really looking forward to it.”
Taggart is yet to find the back of the net for Newcastle in the A-League, but with more regular opportunities in the Jets- starting line-up looming over the coming weeks, the 19-year-old is confident he wont have to wait too long for his first goal in Jets colours.
“It-s something I feel fairly confident about and it-s just a matter of time,” Taggart said.
“Once one goes in, you get the feeling that they-re all going to go in.
“I-ve got quality players around me to feed me the ball, so I think it-s just a matter of time before I get on the scoresheet.”
The Jets and Roar have met twice already this season with the ledger squared at one win apiece. Taggart said he was expecting another close contest come Friday night.
“Brisbane are a quality side. They-ve still got most of the same players as when they won the Championship a couple of times,” Taggart said.
“We-ve worked on a couple of things at training just in terms of how to get ahead of their structure, how to defend against them and how to get through their defensive line as easily as possible.
“They-re a good passing team, there-s a lot of movement, but I think at the moment it-s going to be hard to beat us with the way that we-re playing.
“Especially when we-re at home there-s always going to be that desperation and people like Ruben and Gary drive that.
“We all know the job that needs to be done, so I don-t think matching their desperation will be a problem for us especially in front of all the home fans.”
