The Roar have only ever lost once in Newcastle since the inception of the Hyundai A-League, and showed their class in a fine display of counter-attacking football. Brazilian flyer Henrique was simply too slick for the Jets defence on the night, netting one and setting up another in a lively individual performance.
Much of the damage was done midway through the first half when the Roar scored two goals in the space of just three minutes.
In the 24th minute Reinaldo was allowed too much time on the ball inside the Jets area as he calmly picked out Henrique to tap home from close range.
Moments later and Reinaldo converted an opportunity of his own after he was played in superbly by a delightful Sergio van Dijk through ball. The big Brazilian saw his first shot blocked by Jets- ‘keeper Ben Kennedy before slotting in the rebound.
Ten minutes before the end of the opening stanza and Jets marquee player Fabio Vignaroli whipped in a wicked ball that was met powerfully by the head of striker Sasho Petrovski. However, in a moment that summed up the Jets- evening, the marksman watched his effort crash against the post and trickle agonisingly wide.
Just minutes after the main break Petrovski tried his luck again, this time from long range. It wasn-t to be for Petrovski though, as Roar custodian Liam Reddy held the strike well.
On 67 minutes, Korean dynamo Jin-Hyung Song received a short pass from fellow midfielder Kaz Patafta on the edge of the area, before firing a dipping shot that grazed the top of the Roar net.
20 minutes from time and Bob Malcolm switched play expertly to Henrique who weaved his magic with a fine ball into Scotsman Charlie Miller, who completed a wonderful night for the visitors when he volleyed home from 12 yards.
Branko Culina was disappointed with his side-s performance, particularly given that the Jets had won their past two games at home in the Hyundai A-League 2009/10 season.
“It was a good lesson for us, that unless we maintain that discipline, organisation and teamwork that we are used to that we can be beaten,” he said.
“As a team, it was disappointing; it was three-nil at home. It-s hard to come up with too many positives in that respect, but the positive out of all of this is that we know that we need to be disciplined and play to our game plan, if we don-t we-re vulnerable.”
“I-m disappointed for the supporters, they expected better at home, and we didn-t produce,” Culina explained.
