Jets come from behind in important win at home 

The Newcastle Jets defeated Wellington 3-2 in their last home game of the season, with Cass Davis scoring the match-winner and her first A-League goal. 

This afternoon’s match began with strong intensity from both sides which saw attacking opportunities at both ends of the field. 

The 15th minute saw Wellington’s corner drifting towards the back post, which forced a crucial save out of Georgina Worth. 

Newcastle reacted swiftly with a counterattack that saw the Jets get forward with numbers up front, however, they were unable to convert. 

Phoenix then took the lead in the 26th minute off a set piece corner that saw Marisa Van Der Meer head the ball in past Worth.

In the 38th minute the Jets equalised with a shot turned cross from Cass Davis to find Lauren Allan who slotted the ball in at the back post on her 50th match for the Jets. The score remained level at 1-1 at halftime. 

Both teams came out firing in the second half, eager to score a match winner. Phoenix then took the lead in the 53rd minute with saw Paige Satchell knock one in for her side.

The Jets continued to push forward and create multiple attacking opportunities, this resulted in a goal for the home side, with Ash Brodigan knocking it past Wellington’s goalkeeper Brianna Edwards to bring the score back to level.

The match continued with great intensity for both sides, with end-to-end football as the two teams were pushing to score the match winner in an important game.

Cass Davis was rewarded in the 82nd minute when her work in the box found her in front of the goals with a pearler shot that chipped Edwards and found the back of the net.

The Jets went on to secure the important three points, with the final score at 3-2. It was a perfect home send off for both Tara Andrews, and Claire Coelho who both announced their retirement at the conclusion season.

Gary Van Egmond’s side play their last game of the season against Sydney FC next Saturday the 1st of April at Allianz Stadium at 5pm.
