The Newcastle Jets Youth Team has defeated the Melbourne Victory Youth Team 1-0 in an important National Youth League Round 8 clash at Bob Jane Stadium this evening.
A first-half strike from Marko Jesic, who returned home from Qantas Young Socceroos duties late this week, was enough to give the boys from the Hunter all three points.
The Jets enjoyed fine passages of play throughout the opening stanza, which resulted in a number of goalscoring opportunities. Striker Jason Naidovski was on the end of a handful of these chances, only to be repeatedly denied by the impressive Mitchell Langerak in the Victory goal.
However, it would be Jesic who would steal the show when Matt Thompson-s 25-yard free-kick on 26 minutes could only be parried into the path of the young striker. Jesic duly finished, and the Jets would retain the lead for the remainder of the hard-fought contest.
The second half was an open affair, as both sides looked to attack. The defence of the Jets and Victory held strong though, and coach Craig Deans- men would return home with the spoils.
After the game, Deans expressed that he was happy with his side-s second away win of the season.
“In truth we were perhaps a little unlucky not to score a few more because of the quality of chances that we created.”
“I was definitely happy with the way all the boys performed though,” he explained. “The older boys played well, as you would expect, and the younger guys all looked comfortable and stepped up alongside them.”
“Melbourne had a very good team out there, which made the result all the more pleasing. It also meant that the exercise of having a few of our senior team boys out there was well worth it because they proved to be a strong challenge for us,” Deans said.
