Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets midfielder Craig Goodwin says he and his teammates will have to improve their performance to get a positive result against Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium this Saturday.

Newcastle started their season with a 2-0 loss at home to Adelaide United on Sunday and Goodwin acknowledged the Jets- didn-t perform to their capabilities on the day.

“I think it-s pretty clear it wasn-t the best we-ve played. There were a lot of things that didn-t go right for us and we could have done a lot better,” Goodwin said.

“There were some positives about it and I think now we just have to look forward to the game on the weekend against Sydney and hopefully we can pick up the three points there.

“I think it was a bit of nerves, but also, sometimes on the day, things just don-t go right for you and I think Sunday was one of those games.”

Playing on the left hand side of the midfield, Goodwin was industrious throughout the match against Adelaide and proved to be one of the Jets- best attacking threats with his probing runs down the left.

Despite receiving plenty of praise for his individual efforts, the 20-year-old said there were still areas of his game he wanted to fix up.

“To be honest I don-t think I played anywhere near as well as I can play,” he said.

“There were a lot of things I didn-t do as well as I would have liked.

“In training this week, I-ll look to rectify that and hopefully have a better performance next weekend.”

Goodwin said the Jets would be looking to do a more efficient job of integrating marquee striker Emile Heskey into their style of play.

“I thought Heskey did well for his first game,” he said.

“He-s only been here for just over a week so I think the relationships with all the players that we have will develop.

“As far as our game plan goes, we-re sort of trying to bring him into the set-up of the team with the passing game and fitting him into that as well.

“I think with time, it-s going to get a lot better and he-s going to be a really good player for us.”
