The Newcastle Jets have been defeated by the Wellington Phoenix 2-0 this afternoon in the Liberty A-League.
Jets captain Captain Cassidy Davis had the first big chance of the game when she hit a well timed shot from the edge of the box which forced Phoenix goalkeeper Rylee Foster into a save in the 7th minute.
The Jets continued to show positive signs with Lauren Allan narrowly heading over from a corner in the 26th minute.
The hosts were awarded a penalty in the 33rd minute and Mariana Speckmaier dispatched the spot-kick with ease.
Wellington soon doubled their advantage in the 39th minute when a well-worked move down the left resulted in Hope Breslin clinically finishing from close range to give the hosts a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
The Jets came out firing to start the second half and piled on the pressure at Wellington’s goal.
Libby Copus-Brown almost brought the defecit back to 2-1 when her header was well saved by Foster after great build-up play from Emma Dundas.
The Jets continued to push for a goal back as Sophie Hoban and Lauren Allan continued to move forward with the ball but it was to no avail as the hosts held firm.
Gary van Egmond’s side next find themselves in action against Adelaide United at No.2 Sportsground on December 31st.
