Rodriguez begins training in Newcastle

The Newcastle Jets latest signing, Patricio Rodriguez joined his teammates for training for the first time today, after landing on Australian shores on Wednesday.

The Argentinian winger signed with the club during the January transfer window and their latest recruit will be pushing for a debut in an F3 Derby against the Central Coast Mariners.

The winger – formerly of AEK Athens – has been brought in as an injury replacement for Ronald Vargas, who is currently sidelined after dislocating and fracturing his ankle earlier this season.

Rodriguez has been made welcome over the last few days by the man he will replace, who he also played with at AEK.

Jets’ boss Ernie Merrick said he would be keeping a careful eye on his newest recruit over the coming days.

“Obviously we’d like to get Patricio on the park as soon as possible, but we want to make sure he is in the best possible position to do so,” said Merrick.

“As expected he passed his medical, and overall he’s in great shape coming from Greece mid-season but it’s a big move so we’ll tread carefully.

“We’ve still got a number of key players out, so Patricio is a welcome addition as we push into the back half of the season.”

Jets’ CEO, Lawrie McKinna said the club’s latest recruit would be treated to the best Newcastle has to offer.

“He’s a world class signing and we want to show Patricio what a wonderful city Newcastle is and have him and his family really enjoy their time here,” said McKinna.

“We’ve partnered with Alloggio, who will provide Patricio with a fantastic beachfront apartment right in the heart of Newcastle.

“They’ve made Patricio’s transition into Newcastle absolutely seamless and their contribution to our club has been first class.”

Another massive addition for the January window. Welcome to Newcastle, Patricio.
