Salisbury: The Jets’ biggest asset

Westfield Matilda’s stalwart, Cheryl Salisbury, will lead the Jets’ Westfield W-League squad for the upcoming season.

Whether you judge her on her 150 caps for Australia, her drive to make her home town team a success in the fledgling women-s league or her willingness to share her experience and wealth of knowledge of the game with the next generation of Matildas that make up the Newcastle team, Cheryl Salisbury is the squad-s biggest asset.

Salisbury has a dual role of player and Assistant Coach but Head Coach Gary Phillips light heartedly admits that their coaching roles are interchangeable.

‘Look at Cheryl-s resume. I-m not about to argue the point with her on any aspect of the game unless I know I-m right beyond any reasonable doubt, besides, she towers over me and can run faster than me, what hope have I got,- Phillips said.

Salisbury is happy with the dual role but is eager to focus on her football and rallying her young squad to put in a strong performance in the inaugural year of the Westfield W-League.

‘Gary is doing a great job. For me the priority is bringing the team together on the park during 90 minutes of football and utilizing every available strength we have, whether its experience or the youthful enthusiasm embodied in our younger squad members to put the points on the board for Newcastle each week,- Salisbury said.
