They first shared the field back in 2013 when Cass Davis ran out as a substitute for game number one, and since then, Davis and Hannah Brewer have taken to the field alongside one another more than 60 times.
Hardened defender Brewer spent six seasons with the Jets after featuring in our inaugural season, below leaving to play elsewhere for a few years. She returned in 2017 and has represented the Club ever since, quickly becoming a leader in the squad at around the same time Davis made the step up as captain.
While a lot has been said about Davis breaking the A-Leagues record for most consecutive appearances, a milestone that may have slipped under the radar is Brewer’s after she hit 100 games for the Jets when the side turned out against Canberra last week.
The veteran from Gosford has now played over 125 games in the league, and said she was pleased that the majority of those have been with Newcastle.
“It’s definitely a milestone I wanted to reach for a long time,” Brewer said.
“100 games for my home club and home town is something I’m quite proud of.
“The Jets are close to my heart, I’ve made great friends and relationships here…It’s my home away from home.”
Brewer was on the pitch when Davis first featured in the league, and was there again when she brought up the milestone match against Melbourne City during the week – a special moment for two close friends.
“She’s an incredible footballer and person,” she said of Davis, “She’s one of my best friends. I was stoked to celebrate her milestone.”
“She’s worked so hard to achieve that and I couldn’t be happier for her…There’s nothing more she could do to stay out on that park. She does all the right things and totally deserves it.”
Captain Davis said she was looking forward to celebrating her record-breaking achievement this Friday night at home, as well as Brewer’s top accomplishment.
“I’ve played with Hannah for a long time and she’s one of my best friends, so it was really nice to share [the milestones] with her,” Davis said.
“We celebrated that on Tuesday together, and we’ll celebrate again on Friday.
“I can’t wait to be back at home and to play in front of our fans an family and friends.”
The team take on Brisbane in their final home game of the season at the temporarily re-named, No.6 Sportsground – in honour of Davis’ record – and the side are determined to finish a tough season on a high.
Despite being low on numbers due to injuries ravaging the squad, the two leaders are optimistic about their chances for points in our final two clashes.
“We’re feeling quite positive,” Brewer said.
“We just want to finish as high up the table as we can.”
Davis echoed her thoughts: “It’s been a bit of a tough season for us. We started well but had a bit of a rough patch in the middle.
“We’re pretty disappointed, but it was a tough season. There were a lot of interruptions…we probably haven’t had the same starting line-up for two weeks in a row. We’ve got quite a few injuries as well so we’re low on numbers but we just need to grind it out and finish it on a high.”
