Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets winger Tarek Elrich says he expects the Melbourne Victory to come out all guns blazing in Saturday night-s crucial clash at AAMI Park.
Elrich took most of the plaudits after his first goal since 2008 helped the Jets to a 1-0 win over Adelaide United last Friday, but the 25-year-old knows a big team effort will be required to beat a determined Melbourne outfit this weekend.
“We-ve obviously had a good run, bar the Perth game, and we-re looking forward to the challenge,” Elrich said.
“Obviously their season is on the line so they-re going to come out all guns firing and they-re at home as well.
“They-ve got a lot to play for, but so have we, so hopefully we can go out there, put in a good team performance and get a victory.”
Elrich said it was crucial that the Jets maintained the high standard that has seen them win four of their last five matches.
“Melbourne is a quality team, they-ve got quality players,” he said.
“Obviously it-s not showing that on the ladder but we-re not going to drop our guard.”
Since being moved further up the park by Jets coach Gary Van Egmond, Elrich has clearly relished the freedom he has been given to become more involved in the attacking play.
“I-ve been playing right back for a while now and Gary has pushed me further up the pitch into a wider, more advanced role,” Elrich explained.
“It-s where I started my career and it-s where I really enjoy my football, but wherever the team needs me, that-s where I-ll play.
“Scoring goals always gives you confidence whether it-s a drought or not, but I-ll keep going out there every week to work hard.
“It-s not about who scores the goals as long as we win the games, that-s what makes me happy.”
