Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets marquee signing Emile Heskey says he hopes his move to the A-League will help football continue to grow in Australia.

In an interview with Sky Sports in the UK, Heskey spoke about his move to Newcastle, his time playing in the Premier League and his career with the English national team.

Heskey said he was persuaded to come to Newcastle after seeing what the City had to offer.

“It-s something new for me. Having played in England all my career, it-s something that-s just popped up and I like the look of it,” he said.

“I promised myself that as long as I could play in the Premier League I would, but if I couldn-t I-d try moving abroad.

“The team showed they wanted me and sent me over some videos (of Newcastle), which was nice. The videos showed the beach, the sunshine and a bit about the team and other stuff like that.”

Heskey said he is excited by the recent growth of football in Australia and he is looking forward to being an ambassador for the sport down under.

“It-s a growing market for football. They get the Premier League, so they know everyone in the Premier League and there-s a bit of a buzz about that,” Heskey explained.

“With Australia doing well in World Cups, obviously they-re trying to push football more.

“I believe their national sport is rugby, but they think that football can actually compete with that. That-s how they sold it to me.

“Not just myself, but Del Piero as well. I-ve seen the buzz that he-s created going over there and hopefully do the same and help out anyway I can.”

The Jets recently launched their Emerging Jets youth development program and Heskey said the opportunity to be a role model and mentor to the Club-s youngest players was something he is eager to do.

“They-ve just settled on their youth policy (at the Jets) and all that, so helping with the kids, I-ll have a lot of time on my hands so it will help me to help give back,” he said.
