After bagging his first A-League goal on Saturday, Emile Heskey says his combinations with his new teammates are improving.

Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets striker Emile Heskey says his combinations with his new teammates are steadily improving after he bagged his first A-League goal in the Jets- 3-2 win over Sydney FC on Saturday.

Heskey scored the Jets- second goal of the match with an expertly taken right-footed finish in the 41st minute.

“It was good for the lads to put in the performance that we did and to get on the goal sheet was nice. All round, it was a good day,” Heskey said.

Jets head coach Gary van Egmond said he was pleased with Heskey-s performance and said the ex-Liverpool striker will benefit from more precise service from his teammates.

“It-s about the service for Emile and obviously what he can create. You saw how many times he held the ball up,” van Egmond said.

“We probably can be a little bit better in making sure we get underneath him or get in contact with him to try and receive that ball to play off him.

“Or as you saw, getting the ball into areas where it-s very difficult to contain him such as in the penalty box”

Heskey said he is slowly building on-field combinations and chemistry with the rest of the Jets- playing group.

“Obviously working with the manager on the training field, it-s only a matter of time before our understanding improves,” he said.

“I had only been here a week before the start of the season, so we obviously didn-t get much time to work on stuff.

“As the season goes there will be more time spent working together. We-ve got a good bunch of lads and some good young lads as well.

“They-re taking in what the manager wants them to do and listening, so the only way is up.”
