Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets players Sam Gallaway and Taylor Regan teamed up with Danny Buderus and Pat Vaivai of the Newcastle Knights to help launch the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games at Newcastle Panthers on Wednesday.
The event saw Special Olympics organisers begin their campaign to secure 5000 volunteers for the internationally recognised event that will be hosted by Newcastle in December.
Gallaway and Vaivai modelled the uniforms to be worn by the volunteers during the Games, while Regan and Buderus both spoke about how important it is for the Hunter community to get behind the Special Olympics.
“The aim of today-s event was to get as many people to come in and help make the Special Olympics happen,” Regan explained.
“It-s a great initiative that-s happening in Newcastle in December and they need as many volunteers as possible, so we-re all very happy to help promote that.
“From what I understand there are going to be events held throughout the Hunter.
“There will be a large contingent of athletes from all around the Asia Pacific region taking part, so it-s great for Newcastle to be hosting such a big event.”
The 2013 Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games will be the largest multi-sport event ever to be held in Australia for people with an intellectual disability.
More than 2,500 athletes, coaches and carers are expected to converge on Newcastle for the week-long event starting on December 1.
