The Newcastle Jets AFC Champions League Elite Campaign is set to resume on Tuesday night, with Gamba Osaka travelling to Newcastle to face Mark Milligan’s side
After a tough opening match away in Kashima, the Newcastle Jets return home to face Japan’s Gamba Osaka as we look to secure our first points on the continental stage since 2009.
The Opposition:
Gamba Osaka come into the game off the back of four straight league defeats. They also tasted defeat in the J. league Cup, losing out 5-4 to Kashiwa Reysol, however they have found form in the Emperors Cup and AFC Champions League Elite, beating J. League 2 side Tokushima Vortis 5-0 and Cong An Hanoi FC 4-1.
Their most recent match was a 2-0 loss to the Jet’s previous ACLE opponents, Kashima Antlers.
Tunisian forward Issam jebali is leading Gamba’s scoring efforts so far this season, netting four goals in ten games. Ryoya Yamashita has proved to be a creative threat from out wide, providing six assists from just nine matches.
A familiar name that may appear on the Gamba team-sheet is Eli Adams. The winger scored 11 goals and provided 5 assists last season in Newcastle colours, helping the Club to lift the Australia Cup and Premiers Plate. Adams was recently called into his first national team camp for Australia’s two-match series against Brazil, however he didn’t see any on-field action.
Squad News:
Head Coach Mark Milligan confirmed in the pre-match press conference that Alex Badolato and Oscar Fryer would not be included in the squad, as they continue to recover from the ACL injuries that they suffered last season. He also confirmed that Alex Grant had recovered from his knock, and had a chance to be included in the match-day squad.
