The Newcastle Jets have suffered a 5-1 defeat to Canberra United at McKellar Park in Round 10 of the Liberty A-League this afternoon.
The match began with an attacking opportunity for the Jets, from a counter-attack by Lauren Allan who passed the ball through to Tara Andrews in front of the goals, who was unable to get a foot to the ball.
Canberra also had a chance at the beginning of the game with a free kick just outside of the box, this was safely cleared out by Tessa Tamplin.
Canberra then took the lead in the 16th minute to break the deadlock, when Nickoletta Flannery put a through ball to Michelle Heyman who knocked it past Georgina Worth.
The Jets continued to defend their half, with Canberra creating multiple attacking chances, proving to be too strong in the final third.
The home side doubled their lead when Wu Chengshu chested the ball into the back of the net which grazed past Worth.
The Jets ended the second half with an attacking opportunity that saw Cannon Clough’s sideline run fire the ball in front of the goals to Lauren Allan, who was unable to convert it from close range.
The second half began with both Sarah Griffith and Murphy Agnew making their return to the field after missing previous games due to injuries.
Canberra’s clinical attacking play was awarded again in the 52nd minute with Michelle Heyman finding the back of the net after a cross from Nickoletta Flannery.
The Jets were pushing to create attacking opportunities with American duo, Sarah Griffith and Murphy Agnew working well together in the final third. However, the chances weren’t enough for Newcastle to convert.
The home side cemented their lead to four goals in the 78th minute when Ellie Brush scored a header from a set piece.
The Jets were rewarded when Tara Andrews scored a header of her own which was assisted by Cass Davis from a free kick.
Newcastle continued to attack when Murphy Agnew nearly found the back of the net in the 82nd minute and forced a last-minute save out of Canberra’s goalkeeper Chloe Lincoln.
In the final minutes of the game, Canberra scored another to secure their 5-1 win.
Ash Wilson’s side will next face off against Western Sydney Wanderers on the 28th of January at Wanderers Football Park.
