Newcastle Jets boss Scott Miller says he is relishing his new role as Head Coach of the Jets and is looking to build on the success of the #JETSTOUR with a victory against Perth Glory in the Westfield FFA Cup.
The Jets boss spoke with ABC 1233 Newcastle’s Aaron Kearney in the build-up to their Round of 32 FFA Cup clash with the Glory at Magic Park, Broadmeadow on Tuesday night and Miller said the intensity he first brought to the role has not changed.
“I’m starting to find my feet and adjusting to the place now,” Miller said. “I’m getting a real feel for how we’re going to progress.”
“The intensity hasn’t changed, if anything it has increased over the last two or three weeks and I’m enjoying being in an environment that allows me to do that.
“It’s two months until the start of the season and I haven’t changed much in terms of my football ethic and how I want to work, but certainly the ability to go for a walk along the beach gives you some scope.”
Miller said the team is fully focused on their upcoming FFA Cup match which sees the Jets face the Glory at Magic Park for the second year in a row.
“I said to players the other day there are three key factors we need to consider, winning, performance and momentum for the season,” Miller said.
“Momentum is a big thing and if we win that match or we put in a performance that warrants winning, I’ll be happy.
“Importantly upon reviewing the game I want to see the principles and structures we’ve put in place over that last three to four weeks,” he said.
While Miller says that the key to victory is putting into practice what they’ve been working on at training, he is also adamant that the recent #JETSTOUR of Northern NSW has been crucial in terms of building chemistry in the playing roster.
“For the team the tour was a great situation where the new players integrated into the squad,” Miller said.
“Sitting back at meal time and watching players integrate with each other and building relationships was quite rewarding for all staff.”
Miller said the first ever Jets: Connect tour was a great success and people of Northern NSW “were on fire and really showing support” to the players.
“Driving into towns and seeing kids wearing scarves and hats before we even got there was incredible and it was rewarding for the players to feel at home up there,” Miller said.
“We had a great night in Armidale where people came and saw us for dinner,” Miller said. “People were mingling and it wasn’t just the players and staff on one table, we were sitting within in the community and it was quite real.”
“I think that’s an important reality check for the team, they are footballers and we are privileged but we are a part of the community as well.” Â
