The Newcastle Jets youth team were beaten 2-1 by the Edgeworth Eagles at Jack McLaughlan Oval on Sunday afternoon.
A 10-man Newcastle Jets youth team suffered their first loss of the NBN State League season after they were beaten 2-1 by the Edgeworth Eagles at Jack McLaughlan Oval on Sunday.
Edgeworth came out strongly with a clear game plan to pressure the Jets high up the park.
To their credit, the young Jets players never waivered from the style of play that had seen them win their first five matches of the season, as they continued to keep the ball on the ground and play out from the back.
However, it was Edgeworth with all the early chances and the home side took a deserved lead midway through the first half when Josh Hill nodded home a corner.
The Jets made two changes at the halftime interval, introducing Connor Chapman and Jacob Pepper to the fray. The pair played important roles as the Jets started to do a better job of maintaining possession.
The introduction of Mitch Oxborrow added another cutting edge to the Jets- attack and the 17-year-old almost set-up Newcastle-s equaliser, only for Kael Bradbery to hit his shot high over the crossbar.
The Jets task was made even harder in the 70th minute when Pepper was sent off.
However, despite being a man down the Jets were able to get back on level terms with less than five minute remaining. Josh Small-s squared ball picked out Bradbery with the striker making no mistake with the finish.
Just when the Jets looked to have salvaged a point, Hill popped up again in stoppage time to force the ball home following a corner and give the Eagles a 2-1 victory.
