The Newcastle Jets recently visited Mayfield East, Toronto and Tighes Hill Public School-s in support of the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) SCORES Project.

SCORES (Supporting Children-s Outcomes using Rewards, Exercise and Skills) is an innovative school-based physical activity and movement skills study that has been overseen by Associate Professor David Lubans from the University of Newcastle-s new Priority Research Centre in Physical Activity and Nutrition.

The program aimed at evaluating and addressing a notable decline in physical activity and fundamental movement skills among primary school children involved around 400 students from years 3 and 4.

The project was funded by the Newcastle Jets, which presented HMRI with a cheque for $133,248.

“This is a wonderful initiative and we are thrilled to be involved in this program with the Hunter Medical Research Institute,” Jets CEO Robbie Middleby said.

Jets players Ben Kennedy, Ben Kantarovski, Connor Chapman, Ryan Griffiths, James Virgili and captain Jobe Wheelhouse all interacted with children taking part in games and signing autographs while encouraging a healthy lifestyle.

“I-m a Toronto boy so to pop out to a school in my local area and have fun with the kids was a pleasure,” captain Jobe Wheelhouse said.

“HMRI have done a great job with this program.”
