The Newcastle Jets were defeated 2-1 by Sydney FC at Ausgrid Stadium on Saturday night.
Sydney FC came from behind to defeat the Newcastle Jets 2-1 at Ausgrid Stadium on Saturday night.
Newcastle started the match brightly, creating a great opportunity when Jobe Wheelhouse sent in a great cross to find Francis Jeffers inside the box, but the Englishman sent his first time shot over the cross bar.
Sung-Hwan Byun was making an impact early on and his well-struck shot was spilled by Liam Reddy as the Jets continued to pile on the pressure.
The Jets took a well deserved lead in the 25th minute with tremendous strike from New Zealand International Jeremy Brockie; who took his season tally to four goals.
Jeffers was up to his usual tricks upfront getting in behind the defense, but Reddy did well to come out and snatch the ball off his feet on 38 minutes to prevent Newcastle from doubling their lead.
Newcastle took the one goal lead going into half time; by far the better side in the opening forty five minutes.
Sydney FC looked a different side after the break with Rhyan Grant replacing Brett Emerton at half time. Grant made an immediate impact with a one on one opportunity on 46 minutes with Ben Kennedy thwarting the attempt.
Sydney took advantage of their early second half dominance when Paul Cazarine emerged unmarked for the simplest of goals on 59 minutes, finishing Karol Kisol-s ball across goal.
Labinot Haliti almost made an immediate impact after coming on as a second half substitute for the Jets, but Byun’s free kick was a touch too high as he headed wide on 68 minutes.
Sydney got the goal they needed and took the lead on 83 minutes when Juho Makela headed home Pascal Bosschaart-s volley from a Sydney FC corner.
Things went from bad to worse for the Newcastle Jets as Wheelhouse was shown his second yellow card for the match just a minute later and the home side were reduced to ten men.
Sydney FC maintained the lead to claim all three points.
“The second half performance wasn-t good enough; we were a bit sloppy after we controlled the first half,” said Jets goal scorer Brockie.
“The locker room is very quiet tonight.”
Newcastle’s next game is against Wellington Phoenix away from home. The Jets will be looking to take back the fortress tag at Ausgrid when they take on Perth Glory on New Years Eve.
