Griffiths’ mo-tivation

Ryan Griffiths looks forward to the Jets turning it around this week against Perth, whilst also putting the focus on Movember.

Week four of the Hyundai A-League 2011/12 season saw the Newcastle Jets go down to Gold Coast United 3-1, in what has been described in the media as the ‘away game curse’.

“We got off to a really positive start, which has been a habit of ours over the last few weeks. However it will take us time to adjust to the new playing styles of Gary (van Egmond),” said Ryan Griffiths.

“This away game curse nonsense is just the media-s new flavour of the week. Last week everyone was boasting about our great start to the season, it is funny how the tables can turn after just one game.”

Whilst Sunday’s match on the Gold Coast didn’t go to plan, with another home game this Saturday against Perth, the Jets will be taking nothing but confidence into round five.

“I really enjoy playing for Gary, he is a ruthless coach and I think we need that as a team. He is results driven and really wants the win,” Griffiths added.

“He has told us that as long as we play 100 per cent he will be happy with us; win, lose or draw. But no matter who you are, if you don-t put in the hard work, you won-t get on the field.

“The general vibe amongst the team is extremely positive; Tarek (Elrich), Ben (Kennedy) and Jobe (Wheelhouse) are enjoying his coaching style as he has coached them previously at A-League level.

“Gary coached me when I was playing in youth league and I like to think of him as the coach that toughened me up and prepared me for playing internationally. He coaches in a way I like to describe as ‘tough love-.”

This week the Jets will prepare for Perth Glory but they will also shine a spotlight on a good cause. Movember helps raises awareness and funds for men-s health programs; prostate cancer and depression, and the team are united to make a difference.

“Movember is a brilliant cause! I don-t think people acknowledge how many men are affected by depression. It has affected many people I know and I-m really proud to be raising awareness and funds for this illness,” Griffiths said.

“There is a $50 fine to anyone in the team who shaves their moustache off before the end of November. I plan to shave mine off on the November 30 so I can donate the $50 straight to the cause.

“Unfortunately I-m not very seasoned in growing facial hair but I have had a head start as I haven-t shaved for the last week. In saying that, I-m sure my younger teammates will show me up, but that is okay, it-s all for a good cause,” he added with a laugh.
