The Newcastle Jets have confirmed that the Club’s international signing Jason Culina may miss the first 4 to 6 weeks of the A-League season.
Culina underwent major knee surgery at the completion of last season and had been expected to take his place in the Jets line-up for several of the pre-season games.
Jets CEO Robbie Middleby was disappointed when he was advised that Jason would have to stop all impact training and be sidelined for a period of time.
“Jason has shown a massive commitment to get back as soon as possible and in doing that he has simply pushed his knee too far,” Middleby said.
“It is frustrating that he has trained well all off-season and was just 48 hours from making his debut when our medical team identified some swelling.
“We have had a second medical opinion and will immediately commence a series of P.R.P injections on his inflamed knee.
“Jason will not be doing any weight bearing exercises for several weeks and has been advised to avoid any heavy impact on the knee.
“We are taking all measures to get Jason back on the field as soon as possible but we are all aware that to rush him back will not have long term benefits.”
The Jets take on Sydney FC in a trail game this Saturday night at Cessnock and open their 2011 campaign on Saturday night October 8 at Ausgrid Stadium against Melbourne Heart.
