During his two years at Sydney FC, Sung-Hwan Byun became a crowd favourite and after kicking the game-winning goal on Saturday afternoon, it is easy to see why.
This South Korean native moved to Newcastle this year to take up a one-year contract with the Newcastle Jets, a moved he is happy to have made.
It doesn’t come without sacrifice, Byun’s wife and young child remain in South Korea whilst he pursues his football career in Australia.
“Newcastle is a beautiful place to live,” Byun said.
“I keep telling my wife how nice it is here, much quieter than Sydney.
“I don-t think she believes me but she will see for herself when she comes here in November.”
With only minute-s left on the clock and both teams tied at 2-all, Byun kicked the match-winning goal to secure the Jets 3-2 victory over Melbourne Heart.
“I had a couple of opportunities earlier in the game but was unable to get one in,” Byun added.
“I was really happy to have scored and help the team win.
“When I kicked the goal I looked at the crowd and they were so happy which made the moment even more special.”
Kicking goals under pressure is nothing new to Byun who scored Sydney FC-s Premiership winning goal in a penalty shootout during the 2009/10 Grand Final.
With such a great start to the season, Byun is looking forward to the Jets game against Wellington Phoenix this weekend.
“I am feeling good,” the 31-year old said.
“I believe we have a good team and I look forward to winning more games with the Jets.”
