Brewer earns Matildas call up

Newcastle Jets’ defender, Hannah Brewer has topped off a stellar 2017/18 Westfield W-League season with selection in the Matildas squad for the 2018 Algarve Cup in Portugal.

Brewer has been a standout for the Jets on her return to the club this season, after stints with Melbourne Victory and Canberra United.

A Westfield W-League foundation player, Brewer has made more than 80 appearances in the national league – representing the Matildas on one occasion in 2014.

Jets’ Westfield W-League Head Coach, Craig Deans said Brewer’s elevation to the national team was well deserved.

“Hannah has been fantastic for us this season, and I am just really happy for her,” said Deans.

“To get a call up to the national team speaks volumes for what she’s been doing on the pitch this season, particularly given the strength of women’s football in Australia at the moment.

“She’s a shining example of how hard work and dedication to your craft can pay off – it’s a nice reward for her to cap off a great season.”

Brewer will also be joined in the squad by Westfield Matildas vice-captain, Emily Van Egmond who boasts more than 60 caps for the national team.

Alen Stajcic and his Westfield Matildas squad will leave for Portugal evening.

The Westfield Matildas have been grouped with Norway, China PR, and hosts Portugal at the 2018 Algarve Cup.

Stajcic’s squad will play their pool matches in the cities of Albufeira (two matches) and Algarve, before playing a fourth and final ranking match at the 12-team invitational tournament in a yet to be determined location.

Following the 2018 Algarve Cup the Westfield Matildas will return to Australia where they will continue their preparations for the important 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, which will be held in Jordan.
